Senior Living in Mexico
In 1997, I began a study in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico for my PhD dissertation in Geography from the University of South Carolina. The study resulted in a typology of foreign retirees and expats who chose destinations outside fo their home country. In 2006, I returned to Ajijic with my family on my sabbatical to update my study. At the end of my sabbatical and over the next two years, we decided to move permanently to Ajijic, where we raised our children until they reached Jr High, when we returned to the US. Those ten years offered me a unique view of life as a expat and an opportunity to not only listen to why people moved to this area but also see what they actually did once they lived there. I hope the information I offer here will give you an idea of the nature fo international retirement migration and its impacts on society.
